The story behind the song

I’ve had lots of positive feedback since I shared my song, The Father’s Precious Gifts, last week so I thought I’d share with you all the story behind the song’s creation.

After God called home our precious Lentil, just weeks into our first pregnancy in 2017, I spent a lot of time walking in creation, sitting in the great outdoors, and reading, praying and contemplating there. And I spent a lot of time writing in my journal.

It was during a walk at Rannerdale Knotts in the Lake District at New Year 2018 that God put the beginnings of The Father’s Precious Gifts – the tune and the words about our darling Lentil – on my heart.

I wrote them in my journal, not sure what to do with them. I knew I’d been given them for a purpose but they felt in some way incomplete.

Fast forward to early 2020 and we our preparations to dedicate our second precious baby, our darling Charlotte, to God. As we considered how best to honour our babies and honour God, who granted them to us, the second half of the song came to me.

Thanks to the musical talents of the wonderful Elizabeth Walker, who took my rudimentary voice recording of the song and turned it into the piano arrangement you can hear on the video, The Father’s Precious Gifts was complete.

This song felt like the perfect way to honour both our precious babies at Charlotte’s dedication but I know it’s already touched people beyond that. I hope it brings some comfort to those who hear it who find themselves in a similar position to us.

The Father’s Precious Gifts

Created by the Father
You were our precious gift
We longed to hold you tightly in our arms

We dreamed of days together
When you’d run and laugh and learn
We’d try to keep you safe from every harm

But God’s great plan was different
He’d known it from the start
You’d never have a home on Earth but a home inside our hearts
For better things awaited you
As He called you home to Him
No hurt, no pain, no suffering
But all the glory of the King

Now you’re cradled by the Father
Everlasting precious gift
And He’ll hold us close until we see your face

Created by the Father
Our second precious gift
We get to hold you tightly in our arms

We savour days together
As you grow and laugh and learn
We try to keep you safe from every harm

This time God’s plan is different
You get to play your part
You get to have a home on Earth as well as in our hearts
And such good things await you written in God’s perfect plan
And we long to see you thrive in Him, on His promises firm stand

Created by the Father
Our two most precious gifts
He holds you both so tightly in His arms

Created by the Father
Our two most precious gifts
Your legacies in God’s great perfect plan
